Modules for Engineering Students

The aim of this course is to introduce science and engineering students to the concept of technical writing and information literacy skills. In this course, students are introduced to important aspects of writing skills and structure of written texts. Students are expected to write in a scientific and technical manner.

The course aims to enhance the technical writing and information literacy skills of students of engineering and Technology. It develops students' technical writing skills such as the production of Lab / technical reports. In addition, students will engage in professional communication tasks.

The course is designed for students to engage in practical activities that enhance their professional communication skills at the workplace. The Course provides specialised skills and knowledge necessary for students to communicate effectively within the context of Engineering and Technology and professionally in a work environment.

The course is designed to equip the students with the skills for research within the context of the

specific needs of Engineering and Technology. The skills imparted are intended to enhance mastering of research skills and to the ability to effectively write research proposals and research reports.

Modules for Science Students

The course is designed to develop the students’ academic and literacy skills within the context of the specific needs of Science.  The required competencies are those that are intended to enhance life-long learning skills. It focuses on scientific academic writing and information literacy skills.  In developing these skills, the use of appropriate registers and different information technology tools is emphasised.

This course builds up on the foundation laid in ALSS 101. The course is designed to develop students’ academic and literacy skills within the context of the specific needs of Science.  The required competencies are those that are intended to enhance life-long learning skills. It specifically focuses on scientific writing, portfolio development and information literacy skills.  In developing these skills, the use of the appropriate register and demonstration of critical thinking skills is emphasised.

The course is designed to develop the students’ academic and literacy skills within the context of the specific needs of Science.  The required competencies are those that are intended to enhance life-long learning skills. It focuses on scientific report writing, basic research skills, and oral presentation of research findings.  In developing these skills, the use of appropriate register and referencing techniques is emphasised.

The course is designed to help the students develop oral and professional writing skills within the context of the specific needs of Science.  The skills emphasised are those that are intended to enhance life-long skills such as communication in and outside the classroom, conducting interviews and meetings. It also focuses on professional writing of memos, business letters and curriculum vitae. In developing these skills, the use of appropriate language such as style, clarity, accuracy, brevity and courtesy, is stressed. In addition, students should be able to write professional documents such as technical reports.
