Chinese Language Courses

This is a beginner’s course. Students are required to master 75 common Chinese characters. Students will be able to listen, speak, read and write four sessions; recognize basic components of characters and radicals; know major communicative functions such as greetings, thanks, apologies and farewells; use body languages or material objects to enhance everyday communication situations.

At this level, students will learn basic language materials related to common daily settings. Gain introductory Chinese culture knowledge and acquire preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

Students are expected to master at least 300 commonly used Chinese characters and they can listen, speak, read, and write four sessions. They can dictate basic Chinese characters, masterstrokes, and strokes. They will be able to use simple words and phrases to communicate with others on topics that they are familiar with such as seeking help.

The module assists students to understand and master basic language materials related to individuals or daily life, master basic sentences, conduct simple language exchanges in a relatively simple manner. Students will understand the words about emotions (thanks, apologies) and attitudes (affirmatively or negatively) expressed in life. The module builds the students’ interest and confidence in learning Chinese.

At this level students are expected to understand the basic language skills related to daily life and learning and are often encountered in general communication situations. They should be able to communicate effectively with others in Chinese.

The module will assist students to master 450 common Chinese characters. Students are expected to understand the intermediate language related to daily life and learning. They should be able to communicate effectively with others on familiar topics and organize simple phrases through the use of stress, pauses, intonation or body language. They will also display knowledge of different aspects of culture; for example, Chinese weddings.

This is an intermediate course, and students are required to master 525 common Chinese characters. At this level, they will display knowledge of different aspects of culture, such as Chinese Cuisine.

This is an advanced course; and students will master 600 Chinese characters to enable them to understand and master basic language skills related to individuals or daily life. They will master basic sentences, conduct simple language exchanges in a relatively simple manner. Students will also display knowledge of different aspects of culture such as Taboo Gifts in Chinese culture.

At this level, students are expected to understand a wide range of topics, produce correct sentences, write in paragraphs, create cohesive discourse, and express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They are required to demonstrate confidence and a strong interest in learning and speaking the Chinese language. At this level they should have gained extensive Chinese cultural knowledge and acquired preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

This is the final level of the module and at this stage, students are expected to communicate fluently and effectively in the Chinese language in different communication situations – socially and professionally. They should display the ability to express themselves in Chinese language to express their personal feelings, attitudes, and value-systems. At this level, they should be self-motivated to learn the Chinese language and strive to reach a higher communication level, which can be classified as ‘near native’.
